Volunteer Opportunities

Something Fest volunteers help bring our events to life behind the scenes across registration, speaker support, room operations and attendee experience.

If you’re a student looking to get closer to Queensland’s digital, tech and innovation ecosystem, this is one of the best ways to experience the festival from the inside.

And yes, there’s a pretty great trade-off.

Volunteer for one day and you’ll attend the second day of the event for free.

Who can volunteer?

This program is designed for students and people at the beginning of their careers wanting real exposure to the ecosystem and hands-on event experience.

To be transparent: this isn’t designed as a free ticket option for established professionals, consultants or senior leaders currently completing postgraduate study.

We’re looking for people who are ready to roll up their sleeves and be part of the team on the day.

You’ll also need to be:

  • Reliable
  • Proactive
  • Comfortable talking to people
  • Physically able to work on your feet throughout the day

What do volunteers actually do?

Depending on the shift, volunteers may help with:

  • Attendee registration and check-in
  • Room management
  • Speaker support
  • Directing guests around the venue
  • Helping the event team with logistics and operations
  • General event support throughout the day

No two shifts are exactly the same, but every role plays an important part in keeping the festival running smoothly.

What do you get in return?

In addition to gaining hands-on experience inside a major festival, volunteers receive:

  • Free access to attend the second day of the event they are volunteering at
  • Behind-the-scenes exposure to how large-scale events operate
  • Opportunities to meet people across the digital, tech and innovation ecosystem
  • Practical experience you can add to your CV
  • A front-row seat to some pretty incredible conversations
  • Food and drinks at the events!!!

Some quick notes before applying

Please only apply if you can fully commit to being a volunteer. This includes:

  • Attending a compulsory in person briefing session on Tuesday 18 August from 5.30pm to 7pm
  • Being available for the full day you are assigned to volunteer
  • Showing up on time, being ready to help and willing to be actively involved throughout the day.

For 2026, key elements of Something Tech will be integrated into Something Digital. On the application form you can choose if you would prefer to volunteer for Tuesday 25 August or Wednesday 26 August.
